Nick Tompkins founded NKT Commercial, the Tompkins’ family commercial real estate development company, in 2005. Nick has had diverse experience and success in all aspects of commercial real estate investing, development, and property management and in the food and agricultural industry. 

Tompkins’ real estate investing and development have been primarily focused on the Central Coast of California, specifically San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County where he currently owns and manages property with more than 900,000 square feet of office and retail operations.  

Tompkins, a sixth generation California Central Coast native, has gained a trusted reputation for his innovation and collaborative approach with local governing agencies and stakeholders such as tenant companies and lenders. This has led to unique opportunities for him as a preferred developer in local communities.   His financial investment acumen in locating and developing Class A properties and structuring prudent transaction terms with quality tenants has created a dynamic and solid long-term investment portfolio. 

Tompkins recently completed the Santa Maria Enos Ranch Shopping Center, a 100-acre development on Highway 101 which includes 40 acres containing over 400,000 square feet of retail including tenants such as Costco, Lowes, a 90,000 SF bank headquarters, and multiple national restaurants.  Tompkins developed and then sold the remainder of the project, including a 10-acre parcel for an additional 120,000SF retail center, a multifamily site approved for 300 units, parcels entitled for a 26-acre auto mall, and an elementary school site and city park.  

The Tompkins’ current real estate development projects, in various stages of entitlement, include: a 270-acre property for a master planned community focusing on meeting the area’s significant, unmet housing demands; a 12-acre neighborhood Shopping Center with an adjoining assisted living facility; a 25,000-square foot new office for an expanding tech company; a downtown, hard corner 30,000 square foot retail & office complex; a public/private 600 car parking structure, and several other projects in the early stages.

Tompkins’ community involvement includes serving on the Board of Regents at Mission College Preparatory High School since 2001 and as a member of the Board of Directors of People’s Self-Help Housing Project, a non-profit entity which is the largest developer of affordable housing on the Central Coast of California.  In addition to supporting the Mission Prep School Annual Fund, the Tompkins family also supports several local non-profit organizations including Jack’s Helping Hand, a group benefiting children with developmental learning and physical difficulties in San Luis Obispo County as well as the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of America, Santa Barbara County 4-H, Arroyo Grande Dignity Hospital, and the Guadalupe Library.  Nick and his wife Kathleen reside in Arroyo Grande and have 4 grown children.
