MEAL MONEY

When the pandemic started, some members choose to continue to pay the Butterfly Grill meal cost even though we were not meeting.   The club choose to donate that meal money to the local food banks.   We donated over $2000 to the SLO Food Bank.   We will soon be donating over $2000 to the Nipomo Food Basket.   After surveying the club last month to determine what we should do with the meal money, the largest number of votes were to support members affected by the pandemic, then to use the money for other worthwhile community causes.   We are letting the money build up again and will give it to a worthwhile community cause.  If you see a good community cause, please contact Ed Harris, at movieln2@gmail.com or Cees Dobbe at RotaryNipomoTreasurer@gmail.com.

FUNDRAISER

The board voted to join at least four other local clubs, Arroyo Grande, Pismo Five Cities,Grover Beach and the Eco Club, in a virtual raffle.   Each club will put up two $500 prizes.  Raffle tickets will be $25/each.  Each club keeps all the money for the tickets they sell.  So, the more tickets we sell, the more money we raise.    When the details are finalized, we will ensure everyone is aware.

STEP UP FOR ROTARY

Join me in raising money for Polio Plus in the District Challenge.   It is a challenge to get up and move either walking, biking, swimming you name it.  I am donating $5. for every round of golf I play.   You can get someone to sponsor you or sponsor yourself.   You can make a team and raise money for Polio Plus!  The website is www.stepupforrotary.com.

Committee Reports:
Bruce Beaudoin  spoke at length on the Rotary Foundation and the excellent work they accomplish in the world dealing with such things but not limited to peace, clean water, health and education.
He reminded us to keep abreast of all the activities by logging into Rotary .org and My rotary.org.

Guest speaker was notable Nipomo resident Dr. Herbert Cole Professor Emeritus at UC Santa Barbara. His topic was Royal Arts Of Africa in Ghana. Focusing on Gold and Textiles.
His topic was a subject near and dear to his heart and one that he is amply qualified to speak about as he is the author of 11 books and 60 articles having curated 12 exhibitions including the Smithsonian and the L.A. Museum of Art. Dr. Cole has spent considerable time in Africa doing his research.
He let us know that Ghana a country about the size of New England with the population of Texas has a rich history with art, textiles and gold.
Because the country historically had no written script and the general population was illiterate the kingdom employed Moslems to keep written records for the King.
Europeans began arriving with the Portuguese leading the way in 1480 in search of the gold.
We were able to see multiple examples on screen of the beautiful art and textile of the region and as Professor Cole wove the history and sacredness of gold to the people of Ghana.
Today Ghana is a democracy and free of European rule.
After a few questions our meeting came to an end but not before Ken White was awarded a Rotary Mask for having the most lucrative brag.

JULY 15, 2020 ROTARY CLUB OF NIPOMO
Our Rotary meeting started on time and with no known technical glitches.
This was the 3rd meeting for President Ed Harris.
John started us off with an amusing introduction and
Ken Shadle lead us in prayer.

Harry lead us with our Pledge of Allegiance.

Roger (play ball!) Ridley gave us "our Moment in History".
He started with the Christian Crusades in 1099 cruised through history with such interesting facts about baseball history, the establishment of Boeing Aircraft, the creation of penicillin and all the way to 1971 when President Nixon announced his historic planned visit to China.
July 15 was indeed a very busy day in history.

Bill Puccirelli presented the "Rotary Moment" by giving us the history and meaning of the Rotary Flag.
Created in Kansas City Missouri in 1915. He shared how the flag made its way to the South Pole with Admiral Bird in 1922!
Brags
Harry bragged about his most recent birthday.
Lou bragged about her only daughters 51st birthday.

Announcements:
Jim Harrison reminded us that help is not only welcomed but needed for the Food Program.
Tuesday at Dana Elementary School
Wednesday at Nipomo High School
Both days are 11am-1pm
Lifting required!
President Harris ask us to be on the look out for an upcoming survey concerning meetings.
It was announced that it was Peer Verheis birthday.

Guest Speaker Thomas Kessler from the SLO History Center 696 Monterey Street SLO
gave a talk on the history of the Dalidet family and their influence on the development of San Luis Obispo.
Pierre Dalidet born in France in 1820 and after serving in the Military made his way to the California gold fields.
Having tried his hand at that he decided to move to Mexico but ended up in SLO.
He and his wife had 9 children of which seven lived past childhood.
Like many families there were complex relationships and eventually some estrangement. I guess that can happen when one brother shoots another. ( I bet Thanksgiving was awkward that year!) Juan after shooting his brother Edo and being acquitted moved to Mexico, married had a family and became quite successful in the silver mining industry. The family is still in that region. The other siblings never had children and the last heir of the Dalidet Adobe willed the property to the History society.
Thomas reminded us early on in his presentation that the PAST MATTERS. Much of the same goals, struggles and motivations of our ancestors relate to our own in this age.

The meeting ended with a Rotary face mask being presented to Harry Walls. I guess Harry's wife will be up to the task of making him a shirt in matching fabric!

The meeting ended with a Rotary face mask being presented to Harry Walls. I guess Harry's wife will be up to the task of making him a shirt in matching fabric!

Nick Tompkins founded NKT Commercial, the Tompkins’ family commercial real estate development company, in 2005. Nick has had diverse experience and success in all aspects of commercial real estate investing, development, and property management and in the food and agricultural industry.

Tompkins’ real estate investing and development have been primarily focused on the Central Coast of California, specifically San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County where he currently owns and manages property with more than 900,000 square feet of office and retail operations.

Tompkins, a sixth generation California Central Coast native, has gained a trusted reputation for his innovation and collaborative approach with local governing agencies and stakeholders such as tenant companies and lenders. This has led to unique opportunities for him as a preferred developer in local communities.   His financial investment acumen in locating and developing Class A properties and structuring prudent transaction terms with quality tenants has created a dynamic and solid long-term investment portfolio.

Tompkins recently completed the Santa Maria Enos Ranch Shopping Center, a 100-acre development on Highway 101 which includes 40 acres containing over 400,000 square feet of retail including tenants such as Costco, Lowes, a 90,000 SF bank headquarters, and multiple national restaurants.  Tompkins developed and then sold the remainder of the project, including a 10-acre parcel for an additional 120,000SF retail center, a multifamily site approved for 300 units, parcels entitled for a 26-acre auto mall, and an elementary school site and city park.

The Tompkins’ current real estate development projects, in various stages of entitlement, include: a 270-acre property for a master planned community focusing on meeting the area’s significant, unmet housing demands; a 12-acre neighborhood Shopping Center with an adjoining assisted living facility; a 25,000-square foot new office for an expanding tech company; a downtown, hard corner 30,000 square foot retail & office complex; a public/private 600 car parking structure, and several other projects in the early stages.

Tompkins’ community involvement includes serving on the Board of Regents at Mission College Preparatory High School since 2001 and as a member of the Board of Directors of People’s Self-Help Housing Project, a non-profit entity which is the largest developer of affordable housing on the Central Coast of California.  In addition to supporting the Mission Prep School Annual Fund, the Tompkins family also supports several local non-profit organizations including Jack’s Helping Hand, a group benefiting children with developmental learning and physical difficulties in San Luis Obispo County as well as the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of America, Santa Barbara County 4-H, Arroyo Grande Dignity Hospital, and the Guadalupe Library.  Nick and his wife Kathleen reside in Arroyo Grande and have 4 grown children.
