Lopez High School
Feb. 19, 2020 7:00 a.m.
I retired in 2005 from working at a DOD Company that made ship board radar tracking and jamming equipment and later a Satellite Telephone Company as a Contract, Purchasing Manager. We moved to Grover Beach and started volunteering in different capacities. I met Jann Jeffries at the Pismo State Beach Monarch Grove where we ran the little gift shop for six years, grossing over $100,000 each year for the four months open. We also volunteered for the Backpack Program that packed food for the week-end for students who are food insecure. We deliver them to Mesa Middle School, Judkins Middle School and Lopez Continuation High School. That is how we got exposed to the amazing caring staff at Lopez and heard about their success with the students. Many of these students are homeless, come from horrible backgrounds but because of the nurturing staff the majority of these students graduate and go on to being responsible men and women. So, Jann and I decided to give up the insects and focus on the Lopez students!! We created a Team Closet (named the Wolf Den after their logo) that carries new or barley used teen clothes, baby and toddler clothes for the nursery on campus, toiletries, laundry detergent and dish soap. Our goal is to provide the basic necessities that these students need so that their focus is on completing their education!! |

Coronavirus and Chinese Censorship
Apr. 08, 2020
Wen was born in China at the end of the Great Cultural Revolution. Being victims of the horrific atrocity that killed two million intellectuals and destroyed traditional Chinese culture, Wen's parents had mixed feelings about her education. Despite their discouragement, Wen eventually won a national prize at a science competition when she was 16. Hence, she was accepted into a top university for undergraduate study. In 1994, Wen came to the U.S. for graduate school and received a doctorate in Biology at the California Institute of Technology in 2000. Because of her personal experience of being brainwashed in China, she decided to be a voice for the voiceless. Since 2012, she has given over 200 presentations to community organizations about Chinese culture, history, and human rights. Dr. Wen Chen has been working for Caltech since 2000 as a scientific curator on genomics and biological knowledge. Part of her everyday work is to speak at scientific conferences and seminars in universities like UC San Diego and Harvard Medical School. In her personal life, she is an active member of the Amnesty International Chapter at Pasadena, a board member for Caltech Women in Biology and Biological Engineering, and a special event host for the Caltech Alumni Association. She lives in Pasadena with her husband and two teenage daughters. |
